Council approves ‘Banffshire’ signs
Date -15 May 2008 Return to previous page

Moray Council has agreed to erect road signs marking Banffshire’s historic boundary.

It follows an approach by the Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire, Clare Russell, ahead of next year’s homecoming when tens of thousands of Scots exiles are expected to return to their roots.

The homecoming is a Scottish Government initiative and coincides with the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns.

It is anticipated that many exiles will want to visit places such as Banffshire where their families originated.

Banffshire was formerly a local authority area which disappeared on local government reorganisation in 1975 and part now lies in Moray and the rest in Aberdeenshire.

Mrs Russell suggested that many visitors would have an affinity with Banffshire and its traditional boundary could be marked by tourist signs.

Councillors agreed to fund signage up to a cost of £5,000.
