Moray tops recycling table
Date -09 Oct 2008 Return to previous page

Moray has jumped to the top of the Scottish local authorities league table for recycling.

It recycles 44% of its waste – more than any of the other 31 council areas.

South Ayrshire comes second on 43.1% and Clackmannanshire third on 42.2%.

Moray’s neighbours, Aberdeenshire and Highland, recycle 31.2% and 30.7% of their waste respectively.

In recent years Moray has been among Scotland’s most consistently high recycling areas.

Councillor John Russell, chairman of Moray Council’s economic development and infrastructure services committee, welcomed the confirmation that Moray now occupied top spot.

“Everyone in Moray, from primary school children to senior citizens, can take pride in keeping Moray at the forefront of recycling,” he said.

“The response to the council’s initiatives on household recycling has put Moray at the top of the achievement table.

“But neither the council nor individuals can relax. It will become harder for us to stay in the lead.

“We all need to keep the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle – in our everyday thoughts and continue to divert waste from landfill.”

Moray Council has recycling centres in all the main centres of population and a further 60-plus recycling points in communities throughout the area.
