New Elgin family fun
Date -01 Jul 2009 Return to previous page

A community-based initiative aimed at families with pre-school children will take place in the New Elgin area of Elgin next week.

The activities, which have been arranged by Moray Council’s community learning and development and arts development sections, will target the areas of Waulkmill, Pinefield, Linkwood and Manitoba where a series of fun family learning sessions will take place at local play parks.

The weeklong event, entitled B In These Parks, will culminate with a packed programme of activities at Pinefield on the afternoon of Saturday, July 11.

During the week a variety of community-based artists will be running workshops in the four neighbourhoods for parents and children who will be encouraged to participate and learn as a family.

Support will be given to build skills and confidence and the activities have been designed to be easily replicated within the home using cheap and readily available materials.

The focus of the initiative is twofold – to encourage and support parental involvement and to develop a skills base among parents to enable them to support the learning and development of their own children.

Local community worker Denise Gormley said: “This is an excellent opportunity for the families in these communities to come together in a fun and informal way.

“B In These Parks will provide families with the opportunity to enjoy and learn new experiences collectively as communities.

“We also hope that these families are enthused by the events and identify further aspects of community development that they would like to see happen within their areas.”

The weekday sessions will take place from 10am to 12 noon, with the Saturday event at Pinefield – which will feature more than a dozen different activities - running from 2pm to 4pm.
