In Scotland, Building Standards is a statutory function that is managed by each local authority.
Our responsibility is to safeguard many aspects of the health, safety and welfare of people in and around buildings. We do this in a number of ways, which include:
Building Regulations require that all new building projects are energy efficient, designed to provide a safe and healthy environment for users and are accessible by disabled people. To achieve this, Building Standards Officers often work closely with other bodies such as the Fire Service, Environmental Health, Planning Officers and Health and Safety Executive.
A Building Warrant will be approved once it is confirmed that the building project will meet with all aspects of the Building Regulations.
Although some internal work within houses may be carried out and some small, low risk buildings may be erected without a Building Warrant, generally a Building Warrant must be obtained before work may commence.
When your building project is complete you must submit a Completion Certificate . This must be accepted by the Building Standards Section before you may occupy or use the building.
