Environmental Health is responsible for carrying out the animal welfare regulatory functions imposed upon the Council by legislation. The unit can issue licenses for the following:

• Dog breeding establishments;
• Animal boarding establishments (kennels, catteries);
• Horse riding establishments;
• Pet shops;
• Dangerous wild animals (monkeys, alligators, some snakes, etc.).

Regular inspections of these premises are carried out, sometimes in conjunction with a veterinary surgeon. It is illegal to operate any of the above without the appropriate licence.
