General Information

It is estimated that 23% of the adult population of Scotland have low levels of literacy. With an adult population in Moray of 69,940 this could possibly be as many as 15,971.  In addition to this statistic, a further 30% of adults may find their skills inadequate to meet the demands of the knowledge society and information that we live in. This may inhibit their progression and advancement in education and work but moreover it affects people’s confidence and their ability to contribute to their communities and the economy and to fully participate as individuals, family members and active citizens.

Partner Agencies

Partner agencies of Moray Adult Literacies Partnership work together to address this issue and reduce the number of adults who struggle with reading, writing and using numbers They do this by developing the quality, quantity, range and accessibility of adult literacies learning. MALP is a sub-group of the Community Learning and Development Partnership which reports to the Community Planning Partnership.

Strategic partners consist of both learning providers and intermediary agencies. They are:

Moray Council : Community Learning and DevelopmentLibraries and InformationCommunity Services

Moray College
Careers Scotland
Lead Scotland (Linking Education and Disability)
WEA (Workers Educational Association)
Moray Adult Learners’ Forum
NHS Grampian

What constitutes an adequate standard of literacy and numeracy has not remained static throughout history and the definition the we apply in Scotland today is :

“The ability to read, write and use numeracy, to handle information, express, ideas and opinions, to make decisions and solve problems, as family members, workers, citizens and lifelong learners.”

(The Adult Literacy and Numeracy in Scotland Report ; 2001;  Scottish Executive)

We use the term “literacies” to highlight the dynamic and diverse ways in which adults encounter and use words and numbers in their written form.
