Applying for Jobs - Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you advertise job vacancies?

All our vacancies are advertised on this web site.   Other posts are advertised in various places such as at the job centre, and in the local, regional or national press, or professional journals, according to the type of job it is.

Can I apply for a job vacancy online?

Yes.  You can apply for a general job vacancy online (teaching online application facility is still under development), and view all vacancies and supporting documents such as job description and person specification.   You can save your application and complete it over several sittings before the closing date.   If you experience any problems with this facility you can email the jobsline@moray.gov.ukand you can also download a pdf of an application form which can be filled in by hand and delivered in the normal manner.

Note:  Please do not attach a Curriculum vitae as your supporting information as this will not be accepted.

Why does the Council have a long, drawn out process to follow when they advertise for a job?

The main of of The Moray Council is to provide a high quality, cost effective service for the community.   Making sure we have the right person in the right job helps us to achieve this.   Our recruitment and selection process is based on ‘appointment on merit’ when we recruit and select new employees.   We aim to have shortlisted and informed those candidates of interview dates within 4 weeks of the closing date.

If I want to know more about the job where/who do I contact?

There is a contact name, job title and contact number on the job advert.   This person will have been involved in putting together the job requirements and should be able to help you.

I’ve completed my application form but I didn’t get invited for an interview.   What do I do now?

If you have been unsuccessful or have not heard from us, you may want to know why.   We provide feedback opportunities where you can discuss with someone (usually the contact name in the advert) why you were not successful.   They will point out where they thought you did not meet the necessary criteria for the job in order for you to enhance your chances when you next apply for a post.

I have been asked on the application form to give names and addresses of two referees.   Why does this happen and will it affect my position with my current employers?

In the majority of places, any offer of employment is subject to satisfactory references and medical clearance.   However, there is a space on the application form indicating your consent, or otherwise, for us to contact your referees prior to interview.

If a job involves working with children or the elderly, there are important Disclosure Scotland checks which must also be carried out before your appointment can be confirmed and before commencing employment.   If you wish to accept an offer of employment from us, you should not give notice to your current employer until you have received notification from us that everything is satisfactory.

I am disabled – do I get any special treatment?

The Moray Council is a ‘Positive towards Disability’ employer and as such any disabled applicant who meets the essential criteria of a job specification is guaranteed an interview.

I am disabled – are arrangements in place for me to get access for interview and thereafter if I get the job (wheelchair access, etc)?

Yes.   The Moray Council is committed to ensuring that there is access for all members of the community to its facilities.  There are wheelchair ramps, stair lifts and lifts which enable disabled applicants access to the buildings.

Do I get ‘checked’ if I am working with children – what kind of checks are undertaken and for what kind of job?

Yes.   Disclosure Scotland checks are undertaken for all posts that are going to be working with children and other vulnerable groups of people such as the elderly and disabled clients.   There are three levels of check – basic, standard and enhanced.   For further information please refer to the Disclosure Information on Council’s Jobs page on the internet.

What if I have a conviction – will I still be employed by the Council?

The Council has a Disclosure Policy which outlines the Council’s responsibility in ensuring that vulnerable client groups are protected whilst at the same time ensuring there is no discrimination against individuals when they are applying for posts within the authority.

In general, the Council will seek a Disclosure where there is access to vulnerable adults or young people through the appointment or where the post is in a position of trust as defined in the Act. These are appointments in respect of which the Council would wish to ask exempt questions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA).

Where a Disclosure is deemed necessary for a position, it will be made clear in all relevant documentation that a Disclosure will be requested in the event that an individual is made a conditional offer of the position.
