PPP Project - Elgin Academy

Elgin Academy
-
Elgin
Academy
was built in 1967 and comprises a number of distinct blocks arranged around an inner courtyard. One of these blocks is a
5 storey tower block and the south facing classrooms suffer from solar gain. The blocks also feature narrow corridors and
traveling distances and times between subjects at period changeover can be long. Disability access is an issue, and the school
suffers from major building defects particularly in respect to the external envelope which suffers from regular water ingress.
- The school serves the population in the North of Elgin, and the nearby community of Burghead. The school is a six-year secondary
school and offers a full range of curriculum choices. The school roll at September 2007 was 987 pupils.
- The school is used extensively for community use including sports facilities and community learning classes.
Proposals:
- It is proposed to build a new school in the grounds of the existing school, following which the existing buildings will be
demolished.
- The school will contain teaching and learning spaces to suit the modern curriculum, and modern sports facilities. Community
facilities will be provided at the new school to complement the service currently provided by Elgin Community Centre.
- The building will be fully DDA compliant and will incorporate a wide range of sustainability features.
