James Barlow Hoy

Return to Botanists Page

James Hoy was Secretary and Librarian to the Duke of Gordon at Gordon Castle, near Fochabers in Moray. He is credited, along with James Brodie of Brodie, with the first discoveries, in 1792, of Moneses uniflora, in Moray. This very rare and beautiful plant is typical of the ancient Caledonian pine forests of Scotland, but is now restricted to a very small number of localities indeed. Its common name is Single Flowered Wintergreen.
